There are many advantages of building a dam. There will be more of an affect in the long run. One of the main advantages of the dam is because the dam does not emit CO2 at all. The only emissions of CO2 in this process would be pumping the electricity from the dam to its destination, example Colombo or reservoirs. This is one of the most ecofriendly methods of producing electricity, compared to fossil fuels, which is the most harmful to the environment. This sis because burning fossil fuels emits large amounts of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Also one has to consider the fact that in the long run, the dam will be creating efficient energy without producing/emitting any CO2, and that is why dams are effective.

They produce efficient amounts of electricity and do not harm the environment… as much as fossil fuels do.

In 2004, hydro power was responsible of making 706.9 KTOE, this amount of energy is equivalent to 1,000 tons of oil. By imagining this we can see the amount of CO2 produced into our air, the air we breathe. And we can still gain large amounts of electricity from dams.

Another advantage of building a dam is that it may block/prevent flash floods from happening meaning anything under the bridge quite safe from any flash flood danger, this means that people may live in peace and allow the animals and plant organisms may not lose their lives to a tragic flash flood.

Also one large advantage of building a dam is that it basically becomes a reservoir itself because when it rains, all the water keeps building up behind the dam and this means farmers will never be in trouble when there is a drought, also and more importantly, for the nature side, all the wildlife will have a large supply of water. In other words there is almost a surplus of water.

One very valid reason building a dam is an advantage is because unlike fossil fuels, dams have a renewable source or energy, so it does not take anything important out of the environment.

The past few years, dams have been responsible for about 50% of the Sri Lankan energy produced. This means that the dams alone are producing half of Sri Lanka's electricity than all the other methods of producing electricity. It even outweighs fossil fuels.
