Non-Renewable energy

One of the alternative solutions for the dam is to use non-renewable energy that is already there instead of building a new dam.

The main Non- Renewable energy sources are:

  •  LakWijaya Coal Power Project which is a coal power plant which generates 900 MW, which is enough to power 900,000 homes. The LakWijaya Coal Power Project is owned by EXIM Bank of China. (Powermin IT mope, 2012)

  • Kelanitissa, which is state own and produces 380MW, which is enough for 380,000 homes

  • Sapugaskanda, which generates 160MW, for 160,000 homes

  • Uthuru Janani which generates 24MW for 24,000 homes

However, there is another power plant that will open in 2017, which shows how the new Kitugala hydroelectric plant won’t be necessary. This upcoming plant is called Sampur Power Station. It is state owned and it runs on fuel oil and it will generate 500MW to power 5,000 homes.
