Borderlands is the biggest tourist attraction in Kitulgala. Its activities mainly revolve around the river. Borderlands does white water rafting, kayaking, cannoning, and abseiling. They also offer fun activities such as zip lining, biking, and hiking. Borderlands has about 300 to 400 guests per month. Water related activities are a big part of Borderlands, since 90% of their guests participate in them.

The community in Kitulgala is quite small. Most people in this town get around by walking. The river is a barrier between the houses and the main town, so the community either passes through on a poorly built bridge, or they take the ferry. Most houses do not have a lot of electricity, and there is no air conditioning.

How the river is used

The river is definitely a huge part of tourist related activities. The Kitulgala River also gets used by the locals for bathing and clothes washing. When I interviewed the ferryman, he told us the river was a spot for pilgrims to stop and bathe at on their way back from Adam’s peak.
