Should The dam be built?
In conclusion I believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, as you have seen in the page prior to his, Sri Lanka will gain quite a large amount of energy. But I believe that having more energy is not worth destroying a whole eco system, many organisms will die. There will be no further creation of small floodplains or islands because no sediment from upstream will be able to travel because it is blocked off by the dam. And building a dam can largely increase the destruction a flash flood could cause, with all the water stuck behind the dam, there will be lots of pressure pushing against the dam and if it breaks everything under the dam will be wiped out. I believe that the best alternative to the dam is wind power, Sri Lanka is an island and has a long coast. Coasts are known for having fast and strong winds. I believe that Sri Lanka should start building more wind mills because they can produce large amounts of electricity but at the same time, it is still ecofriendly and does not emit any CO2. Also building wind mills won’t destroy any ecosystems, the only disadvantage is that they are expensive, for 100kilowatts a wind mill could cost around 3,000 to $8,000. And the only other disadvantage is that they take up space.
The Kitulgala dam should not be built.
